HUG0 BOSS BOAT – VENDÉE GLOBE 2020
HUGO BOSS have sponsored British sailing team Alex Thomson Racing since 2003. The PARTNERSHIP is one of the most enduring and successful sponsorships in the world of sailing. The VENDÉE GLOBE is a single-handed, non-stop around-the-world race, often referred to as ´the EVEREST of sailing´. Alex has achieved THIRD and SECOND place finishes in the last two editions of the iconic race. In 2020, he is READY TO WIN onboard his new generation of IMOCA 60 yacht, HUGO BOSS.
HUGO BOSS outfits skipper Alex Thomson and his team with high-performance clothing for every conceivable type of weather, and also wardrobes them with high-fashion apparel for all formal events and functions.
Alex Thomson is one of the world’s most accomplished solo offshore sailors. The youngest skipper ever to win a round-the-world yacht race at the age of just 25, he has since gone on to forge a reputation as a truly formidable competitor in a sport which demands ambition, determination and resilience by the bucket load.
Having conquered the odds, triumphed over adversity and won the hearts of fans around the world in 2017, Thomson will ‘go for gold’ in 2020.
The Vendée Globe is one of the most prestigious events in the sport of sailing.
The single-handed, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world yacht race first took place in 1989. Since then, the race – ‘the Everest of sailing’ – has been held every four years and remains the pinnacle event in the offshore sailing calendar.
On 8th November 2020, more than 30 sailors will take to the start line in Les Sables d’Olonne to compete in what will be the 9th edition of the Vendée Globe. In what is set to be the most competitive fleet in the race’s history, veterans and debutants, onboard old and new generation boats, will go head to head with only themselves to rely on, both in mind and body. For some, merely completing the endeavor will be a lifelong goal realised. For others, meanwhile, the objective is far more unattainable; to win, and to beat the existing record held by Frenchman Armel Le Cléac’h of 74 days, 3 hours, 35 minutes.
THE HUGO BOSS YACHT
SUSTAINABILITY | INNOVATION | MASTERY
After finishing in third and second place in the previous two editions of the Vendée Globe, in 2017 Alex Thomson and his team set out to design and build a brand new, custom, IMOCA 60 racing yacht, one capable of winning the race in 2020-2021.
The team called upon British boat builder Jason Carrington – a man best known for his meticulous approach and fanatical attention to detail – to manage the build of the yacht. Together, Alex Thomson Racing, VPLP and Jason Carrington worked collaboratively to devise and conceptualise every element of the structure, performance and aesthetic of the boat.
The final step in the process was to appoint industrial designer, Karim Rashid, who was tasked with devising a unique brand identify for the yacht, one which would further allow HUGO BOSS and Alex Thomson Racing to combine and celebrate style, innovation and sustainability.
